This is a newly typeset edition of Charles Spurgeon’s commentary on Matthew. Originally published as The Gospel of the Kingdom, it was largely written during the last days of the great preacher’s life. This commentary therefore represents the fruit of a lifetime spent in the study and exposition of Scripture.

It bears all the hallmarks of the genius of one who in his day was known as ‘the Prince of Preachers’ – reverence for the very words of Scripture, faithful teaching, deep insight, practical application, profound simplicity and spiritual power. Above all, from start to finish, the reader is struck by his unbounded devotion to and commendation of the Lord Jesus Christ – the King who is himself the gospel of the kingdom.

“Spurgeon always provides a solid meal and sustenance on which one can live… Never was the truth he preached and proclaimed, in such a winsome and powerful manner, more needed than today.”?
– Martyn Lloyd-Jones
